July 14, 1789—In a key event early in the French Revolution, an angry mob in Paris storms the fortress and prison known as the Bastille.

July 16, 1941—New York Yankees outfielder Joe DiMaggio hits safely in game against the Cleveland Indians, extending his hitting streak to 56 consecutive games. The 56-game streak that still stands as a major league baseball record.

July 16, 1945—As World War II nears an end, Prime Minister Winston Churchill of the United Kingdom, President Harry S. Truman of the United States, and Premier Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union, meet in the German city of Potsdam to decide the future of a defeated Germany.
