Dec. 6, 345—Nicholas, the bishop of Myra (in present-day Turkey), dies. Stories of his generosity eventually became part of the Christmas tradition and St. Nicholas became the basis for Santa Claus.

Dec. 10, 1948—The United Nations General Assembly adopts a Universal Declaration on Human Rights.

Dec. 8, 1980—Former Beatle John Lennon is shot to death outside his New York City apartment building by mentally unstable fan Mark David Chapman.

Dec. 10, 2001—The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the first in a three-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's epic fantasy trilogy, premieres in London.
