Weekend Exclusive | The History Book

March 5, 1770: The Boston Massacre — British soldiers, taunted by a crowd of colonists, open fire, killing five and injuring 11. The event contributed to the outbreak of the American War of Independence five years later. At a subsequent trial,a jury acquitted six of the eight soldiers; two were convicted of manslaughter.

March 2, 1877—Republican Rutherford B. Hayes is declared the winner of the 1876 presidential election over Democrat Samuel J. Tilden. Tilden had won the popular vote and apparently had more electors than Hayes in the Electoral College. But electors from three former Confederate states (Florida, Louisiana, and South Carolina) were disputed. An electoral commisssion awarded the 20 disputed electoral votes to Hayes.
