July 2 1964—President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964, to prohibit racial segregation in public places.

June 30, 1986—The U.S. Supreme Court rules in Bowers v. Hardwick that states can outlaw homosexual acts between consenting adults. Justice Byron White, argued that the Constitution did not confer "a fundamental right to engage in homosexual sodomy."

July 2, 1776—The Continental Congress passed a resolution that "these United Colonies are, and of right, ought to be, Free and Independent States."
