Weekend Exclusive: The History Book

Sept. 22 1776—During the Revolutionary War, British troops hang 21-year-old Nathan Hale for spying for the colonies.

September 25, 1789: Congress amends the U.S. Constitution to prohibit establishment of a state church, and prohibit government interference with the free exercise of religion.

Sept. 23, 1957—Nine black students who had entered Central High School in Little Rock, Ark., are forced to withdraw because of a white mob outside. Two day later, they are escorted to the school with hundreds of U.S. Army troops standing guard.

Sept. 22, 1975—In San Francisco, radical leftist Sara Jane Moore fails in an attempt to shoot and kill President Gerald R. Ford.
