July 8, 1776—Col. John Nixon gives the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence to a crowd gathered at Independence Square in Philadelphia.

July 8, 1776 – George Washington orders the Declaration of Independence to be read out loud to members of the Continental Army in New York City for the first time.

July 9, 1896—William Jennings Bryan caused a sensation at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago with his "cross of gold" speech denouncing supporters of the gold standard. Bryan went on to win the party's nomination.

July 7, 1928 – Sliced bread is sold for the first time by the Chillicothe Baking Company of Chillicothe, Missouri.
