The toll

Three weeks after Katrina struck, the National Next of Kin Registry was still posting thousands of entries from family members searching for loved ones in the hurricane's path. "Does anyone know the whereabouts of Wayne, Judi, or Dallas Overall?" was a typical post, followed by a Sept. 18 update: "They have all been found safe." Still, the Red Cross continues to log thousands missing. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children reported over 2,000 children's names either missing or looking for their parents. The storm's official death toll as of Sept. 22 remained mercifully below expectations.
