Staff members commit to changing not only other lives but their own. Tammia Bartlett, who serves as a combined teacher, guidance counselor, and administrative assistant, moved from her safe home in Collingswood, N.J., across the tracks to Camden so that she could better identify with the kids she serves. Andy Joshua, who left a future career working for the Pentagon in international security policy to work directly for kids' futures, sums up his 10 years of service with the recommendation: "A lot of times, people think, 'Oh, you've sacrificed to serve God.'
