Alaska

(republican)

In 2002, GOP Sen. Frank Murkowski named his daughter, Lisa, to fill his seat when he won a race for governor. Now Ms. Murkowski is facing voters for the first time-just when many seem angry about the state's direction under her governor/father. Adding to her problems: Alaska Right to Life on Oct. 18 refused to endorse her, citing "a mixed voting record on pro-life issues."

Democrats think they have a great candidate in former Gov. Tony Knowles. But Republicans are gleefully linking Mr. Knowles to John Kerry, a leader in the fight against Arctic oil drilling, which would have been a boon to the state's economy. The race is a statistical tie.
