Actress Alicia Silverstone, star of the movie Clueless, in an interview about the film with the Sunday Telegraph.The Plain English Campaign gave Ms. Silverstone its Foot in Mouth prize for the quote, which it described as "the most baffling verbal statement of the year."

Swarthmore College junior linebacker Jon Bartner, on the school's decision to drop its football program, which has won just five games in the last five years. Mr. Bartner joined about 100 other students last week at a sit-in to protest the action. Swarthmore had the nation's 15th-oldest college football program, going back to 1879.

Mr. Gore should not win by subtracting votes legitimately cast for his opponent.

The New York Times, commenting on Al Gore's support for the Seminole County case of improperly filled-out ballot applications. The Times said Mr. Gore's "refusal to forcefully call on his local supporters to drop the suit, or to rule out benefiting from its outcome, represents a failure of statesmanship on his part."

There was no good news for Al Gore other than his lawyers were not jailed for contempt.

CNN correspondent Jeff Greenfield, after Florida Judge N. Sanders Sauls ruled against Mr. Gore on every point, denying the vice president's contest of the results in Florida's presidential election.
