IN THE SPOTLIGHT
When Walt Disney made his concert movie Fantasia back in 1940, he intended it to be regularly updated with new features. That wish was finally granted with Fantasia 2000 (Rated G), his studio's latest attempt to show that the founder's legacy hasn't been entirely fogged up. To add spectacle to its revised masterpiece, Fantasia 2000 has been blown up to the six-story proportions of IMAX. It's the first major motion picture shot for the big domed screening rooms. The film's six all-new segments are dazzling. (The one holdover, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," looks amazingly grainy.) Happily, Fantasia 2000 stays far from MTV-land and instead features Mickey, Donald, a family of whales, the Steadfast Tin Soldier, and more. Each segment is in a different style, with most differing from typical Disney technique. The best is a New York scene set to "Rhapsody in Blue," with animation inspired by Broadway illustrator Al Hirschfeld. The original was hard for ordinary viewers to watch and seemed more interested in showing off than entertaining. (Generations of children have been put to sleep over the years watching it.) The revision is far more approachable, kid-friendly, and great fun.
