IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The wonderful thing about Tiggers, is Tiggers are wonderful things!Ó The Tigger Movie (Disney; rated G) is exactly what youÕd expect: a feature-length trip into the Hundred Acre Wood. Coming over 30 years after the famous short subject Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree, this is enough to set any 5-year-old bouncing. Even though this is obviously inspired by the success of Tigger toys, this movie tries to stay true to A. A. MilneÕs original fanciful vision of East Sussex. ThereÕs even E.H. Shepard-style artwork over the ending credits. The Japanese animation used here doesnÕt seem Disney-ish at allÑand in only a few places does the movie seem to have been made in the 1990s. Too bad what Tigger gets for a story is a threadbare bit of cartoon-character anxiety. Nobody will bounce with Tigger, so he goes off in search of his family tree. He thinks heÕs looking for a real tree where all the other Tiggers are bouncing away. Meanwhile, his friends all feel bad for him and write a letter from his ÒfamilyÓ saying that they miss him. This drives the plot to where Christopher Robin appears to straighten everything out. Naturally, Tigger learns his real family is Pooh, Piglet, and his pals. This doesnÕt match the classic Pooh tales, but itÕs a step above some of DisneyÕs more formulaic major features.
